How Local Farmers Help You Eat Healthier in the New Year

Do you want to eat healthier in the New Year? If so, you’re not alone—this popular resolution has taken more than half of Americans by storm! With more and more research pointing to the need to change our usual dining patterns to more healthy and sustainable ones, people are wondering how they can eat healthier while still enjoying their favorite foods. Find out how local farmers help you to eat healthier in 2020!

No Chemicals Pesticides or Fertilizers

Unlike major agricultural operations, small farmers like Iron Station Farms are often better able to commit to a cleaner farm. Why? Because we treat our farm like our homes, not like a factory. We care for our animals and our space because it is valuable, and because our customers are valuable. By putting in more work to care for our animals, as well as using natural techniques such as pasture rotation and natural grazing, you can trust that the beef, lamb, or chicken from Iron Station Farms is always natural.

No Unnatural Hormones or Unnecessary Antibiotics

The size of the average chicken has grown about 300% over the past 50 years! Why are chickens having such growth spurts? Usually, because of artificial hormones and unneeded antibiotics. Both of these have been used to make livestock grow bigger and produce more meat, but increase our society’s risk of antibiotic resistance. Further, the flavor, nutrition, and texture of these artificially-enhanced meats are often inferior to fresh, delicious, natural livestock. On our farm, we believe that nature should be the only source of hormones, and antibiotics are only used for animals who truly need them, such as if they become injured. The only thing we add to our healthy livestock is more fresh air and a new pasture!

Grass-Fed

While studies are still out, many early investigations of grass-fed beef suggests it is higher in nutrients and many consumers report improved taste as well. That’s why at Iron Station we are moving towards all grass-fed meats. We do offer our livestock only the best quality, vitamin-fortified, USDA inspected, grain available which we obtain through a farm co-op.
